I get asked all the time what my favorite part of being a photographer is. Without a second thought, lifestyle.
It’s not a secret that I’m not a fan of posing and props so as I was laboring over what theme to do for this summer’s mini session event a few months back, I had the novel idea. Do away with things that cause me stress. Focus on things I love-and I love capturing families at home. My focus turned to in-home lifestyle minis and it was as if a weight had been lifted.
No worry about finding a free (or even affordable) location with ample parking for numerous clients. No worry about summer rain storms canceling the entire day or ruining rented furniture halfway through the day. No scheduling and planning for the best light of the day. No worry of what props to rent and how in the world I will transport it all to the location. Just me, my camera and your home with your beautiful babies. To be natural and unscripted. To document those moments you hold so dear in this stage of life. The chaos and quiet times. The moments you are immersed in, but never get to see what you truly look like as a parent. And let me just say, it’s a beautiful view.
The moments and events that took place with each family were based on the time of day. If they had a morning session, we ran through a morning routine of breakfast, changing diapers and getting dressed. If they had an evening session, the bedtime routine was more of the focus. Nothing was fake or acted out. When the children were put into bed, we all said goodnight and the door was closed. Each mini session was given 1 hour of time which allowed for about 3-4 activities to be documented without rushing. Of course, there is always plenty that happens in-between that deserves to be captured as well.
I am a better parent for watching these families through my lens. I learn so much and also come away feeling encouraged and reassured that I’m not alone. This is more than just a job to me-it’s my support group!
Saying that I”m humbled and honored to be welcomed into your homes sounds cliche, but it is the absolute truth. I love being a part of your lives. So thank you.
